In spring, you will be woken up by folk music at its best - Folk and Traditional Music Festival ETHNIESY in Bydgoszcz. Right now, book some time between 18 and 21 March 2021. If we are not able to meet face-to-face, we will certainly see and hear each other online.

This will be the 8th edition of one of the greatest folk music festivals in Poland. The most interesting performers, presenting different faces of folk music, will perform in the City Culture Centre in Bydgoszcz. At the long-awaited festival ETHNIESY, apart from Polish artists, guests from abroad will also perform: British musician  Matthew Halsall with the Gondwana Orchestra and, both from Spain, Marala Trio and Duet Daura.

This festival is not only for the fans of typical folk sounds, which was proved during the previous editions of the event. Also this year the organizer, the City Culture Centre in Bydgoszcz, with Dominka Kiss-Orska leading, invite you to travel the extremely colourful and diverse music world, where folklore is inflected in all possible ways.

We had to wait a long time for this event. Due to the pandemic, the festival didn’t take place in the spring 2020, but everything that could not sound then, will sound on stage in March 2021.

During the four festival days, from 18 to 21 March, the following artists will perform: Polmuz, Lumpeks, Radical Polish Ansambl with Michał Górczyński and Buba Badjie Kuyateh. The last mentioned, born in Gambia, comes from a griot family and he is a real kora (West African harp) virtuoso.

A must-hear is Matthew Halsalla & the Gondwana Orchestra. This trumpeter coming from Manchester is not only a composer, a music producer and an arranger, but also one of the greatest contemporary British talents. His beautiful, a little sleepy and soulful music is so diverse, that there will be something for everyone. During ETHNIESY, he will perform with his new band.

Apart from the sounds from Manchester, the long-awaited traditional music straight from Catalonia will be heard from the CCC stage. It is all thanks to Marala Trio, who will use a binaural microphone while presenting their own compositions based on traditional folk music. A binaural microphone makes it possible to capture, very precisely, each sound within 360º. These sounds are recorded and sent to each participant of the concert through headphones. Thanks to this device, Marala’s concert will be such an amazing music experience.

We will be introduced into the world of Catalan musical instruments by Duet Daura. Their show is more than musical workshops, during which we will hear such instruments as gralla - a kind of shawm, flabiol i tambori (a flute played with one hand and a drum beaten with the other), pandero quadrat – a square frame double -sided drum, botd'aran – bagpipes and accordion.

Then, a Spanish group - Sambach - will prove that baroque compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach can harmonize with Brasilian popular music.

The festival will end with a concert of Monodia Polska, who will present some extraordinary religiousand secular songs, conveyed in the oral tradition.

There are also numerous accompanying events planned, such as vocal workshops (the Academy of Voices of Tradition) or painting exhibition (Paulina Karpowicz and Monika Marchewka).
